This morning we headed out to Bainbridge, Georgia (about a 45 minute drive west from us) to participate with our church in the Great American Clean-Up - National Day of Service. Since we got there late (we went to put gas in the Tahoe and the pump died! Yep, it's true--what a fiasco and then we got lost) we were headed out with the last party. We had two areas of work: a former crack house and a beautiful park. The neighborhood of the crack house was a little scary, so we had a police escort who stayed with us while we worked. We cleaned up the yard of a small house that was probably darling in its prime. Today it is awaiting a bulldozer~very sad. The yard was not all that big, but we filled 27 FULL large black plastic garbage bags with all kinds of debris. I took these pictures after we had finished the work--I wish I had gotten a "before" picture.

Our second work site was Boat Basin Park which is at the Port of Bainbridge (side note/trivia: Port Bainbridge is the most inland port in the U.S.. Apparently it goes down all the way to the Gulf of Mexico). The park is just beautiful and has all kinds of neat things to see. Here is an old train (the kids enjoyed climbing it). Dave was getting ready to start picking up trash with his "grabber"
The park has a wonderful zoo area that is filled with goats, emus, and a lone mule. There is this walkway that surrounds the zoo area and runs along the waterfront. The weather was spectacular today---too bad it'll be gone in a couple of weeks and we'll be hit with the sweltering heat and humidity.

The Emus were running around with us waiting for food (people feed them bread). Here is one mama Emu with her eight babies. They were so cute! I loved their stripes! They looked like little fuzzballs.

This was the group that met us at the fence. They were trying to find some cooler air and hoping we brought food--sadly we all had nothing for them ~ which was probably better for them over the long haul.

It was a fun day. We enjoyed giving back to our community! And we had a wonderful group to work with! I'd say the day and the service was a success and we couldn't have picked better weather to work in!
