Southern heavy rain to snow
2:05 p.m. ET 2/28/09
A storm system moving across the Southeastern States is bringing heavy rain and thunderstorms to northern Florida, southern Georgia and the eastern Carolinas. Rainfall totals of 2 to 3 inches are possible.
Severe thunderstorms are possible from northern Florida and southern Georgia; large hail and locally damaging winds will be the primary threats, but isolated tornadoes are also possible. During the morning, a tornado caused damage in Tallassee, Bleeker and near Opelika, all in Alabama to the west of Columbus, Georgia.
This storm system will slide to along the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast Coasts tonight and Sunday, spreading several inches of snow and a wintry mix from western Virginia to New England.
Cities potentially impacted include Washington, D.C., Philadelphia, Pa., New York City, and Boston, Mass.
Meanwhile, an intensely potent upper-level storm will move into the lower Mississippi and Tennessee Valleys tonight; locally heavy snow could fall over Tennessee, including Memphis, and northern Mississippi, including Tupelo. Farther north, parts of northeast Kansas and Missouri have picked up 6 inches of snow.
Heavy snow could also fall for cities like Huntsville and Birmingham, Ala. Sunday morning
Sunday, snow or rain changing to sleet and snow could fall from parts of Georgia into the Carolinas. This will impact cities such as Atlanta, Ga., where several inches are possible, and Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C. where even greater accumulations are possible by late day.
This vigorous upper-level storm will develop a new storm system off the Southeast Coast, which will move north, along the East Coast and intensify Sunday night and Monday. This could potentially spread heavy snow and gusty winds across the eastern Mid-Atlantic, southeast New York and New England, including the Washington to Boston corridor.
