After I had posted the other pictures, I realized I left off a few others from around the Coliseum. Here are a few more we saw that first day in Rome. We were tired, but so full of adrenaline, we just kept going until the sun was almost down!
Piazza Venezia (Il monumento a Vittorio Emanuele II) - this building is glorious. The sculptures are HUGE and beautiful! There is construction going on, but on our way back after the cruise, it was opened up for touring and we got to see the beautiful carvings and marble inside. What was really spectacular was the view of Rome from the top....but I'll post those pictures later...
St. Sebastion Palantino
This row of doors were actually all alters that held different sculptures or pictures of the nativity or Christ. They were all screened. At the top of the hill, was the church. It was quite plain for the area that it was in.
Another side of the Coliseum--I loved the cobblestone roads! It reminded me of the roads in Germany when I traveled there when I was 11.
I thought this angle of the Coliseum and the Arch of Constantine was pretty nice. You can tell that Dave was getting tired.
Lots of ruins all around! These were all within walking distance of the Coliseum. Rome must have been glorious when all of these ornate buildings were in their glory!
This was just the first day of Rome---I was in love and still am--Rome is a spectacular city of incredible beauty and history. The Italians have done a wonderful job of preserving these precious relics and incorporating the new with the old architecture!
More pictures of Rome coming!
